YBUY allows you to try some of the best products around for just $24.95 a month. At the end of the month, you decide whether you want to pay for the item and keep it, or return it. They pay for shipping both ways, which makes it very convenient and almost too good to be true. I had a customer interview/Q&A session with some YBUY folks recently, and found that they really care about their customers. Each customer has a Personal Customer Assistant that will answer any questions you may have, even on the weekends! YBUY is changing the way people buy products online while curating the best products around so you don't have to.

Below are the products I've tried as of today.

Month 1 (March): FitBit Ultra
Price to purchase new: $99.00

The first month, I wanted to understand how the YBUY process worked, so I ordered the least expensive item they had (in case something went wrong). I actually ordered the Nike Fuel Band for this month, but they did not anticipate such a large demand and didn't have any in stock. I understood, as the Fuel Band was just recently released that month and all startups have growing pains, so I opted for the FitBit instead. The FitBit is basically a very intelligent pedometer, that tracks steps, sleep, and other metrics. The device came via UPS and was brand new, never opened. I used the device for a few weeks but I found myself growing distant from it pretty quickly. It became a chore to charge the device, sync it, and clip it onto myself everyday.

Month 2 (April): Apple iPad (New Generation)
Price to purchase new: $499.99

The new iPad was announced in March, so I wasn't sure if they were going to have enough in stock to fulfill the demand for it. Fortunately, I saw their announcement of it and stalked their Facebook to see when it would be released on YBUY. I received the iPad brand-new and have been heavily addicted to it since. I've thought about purchasing an iPad before, but I've never had a huge need for one. The new iPad retina display is gorgeous though, and I highly recommend this version but I will be sending it back since it's not the exact version I want.

Month 3 (May): Breville Barista Express
Price to purchase new: $599.95

I just received my May product yesterday. This item is the most expensive and largest item I've had. I was very skeptical about such a complex device but I definitely wanted to learn more about the process of making espresso. Unfortunately, the product I received was used (which is fine) and a bit dirty (which is not). I spent 30 minutes cleaning the device before I used it the first time. Since it was my first time using a Espresso machine, it took me half a bag of roasted coffee beans before I finally extracted a good espresso shot. The machine comes with a built-in grinder, and milk frother, which has become very handy. I have a good feeling I'll be using this machine daily.

Final Thoughts

Subscription-based companies are all the hype right now, and YBUY is one of the most interesting I've seen. I've enjoyed the service so far, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to try or buy new products every month.

Joining Whimseybox, Moving to Chicago

http://www.patricknavarro.com/4/post/2012/04/joining-whimseybox-moving-to-chicago.html

http://www.patricknavarro.com/4/post/2012/04/joining-whimseybox-moving-to-chicago.html#comments

Uncategorized

[...]

As many of you know, I co-founded my first startup with my friend Natalie at the end of last year and we have been working on it full-time since then. I've spent many hours writing code that began as something completely different than what it is today, and I have learned so much about starting a company in the process. Skillow, the original idea, started out as a marketplace where you could learn anything from anyone, but eventually transformed into a resource for entrepreneurs. We saw some growth but certainly not the numbers we were looking for. Therefore, we left Skillow to focus on a new idea, a subscription service for pets, known as BestFriendBox. In the past few months, we've shipped boxes of all-natural goodies to pet-owners across 30+ U.S. states, and even to Canada. We've had great feedback from pet-owners and the company continues to grow.

However, opportunity knocks. Just recently, I was asked to become a co-founder of a Houston-based company called Whimseybox, a subscription service for the DIY and craft community. Over 500+ Whimseyboxes were shipped out to happy customers this month alone! Alicia DiRago, the founder and mastermind behind Whimseybox, flew me out to Chicago a few weeks ago to interview for a startup accelerator she applied for called Excelerate Labs (a top 3 ranked program).

Excelerate selects 10 companies (2-3% acceptance rate) every summer to help them reach the next level. They provide capital ($25,000), mentorship, and legal help, in exchange for a 6% stake in the company. The interview wasn't a walk in the park, with tough questions from Sam Yagan of OkCupid and others, but eventually we heard the news that Whimseybox was accepted into the program!

To say the least, I've been doing lots of thinking in the past few weeks. I've thought about the best decisions I've ever made in my life to see what they shared in common. I found that every time that I push through the feeling of being scared of taking a risk, really amazing things happen. That said, I'll be leaving BestFriendBox at the end of the month to join Whimseybox as a co-founder / CTO and will be relocating to Chicago next month! I'm very excited to join the Whimseybox team, which is now up to three team members, and I'm looking forward to new challenges this summer. I'm also very happy to hear that we will be working out of the new startup coworking space in the Merchandise Mart Chicago called 1871, which opens next week. There's even an Intelligentsia coffee shop opening soon inside the building!

Wish me luck on my next chapter!

Whimseybox and Alicia were mentioned in this article in the Wall Street Journal today. I was skeptical at first since I’ve never purchased wholesale parts, but since the prices were reasonable (~$16 OEM for the back plate) I bought two, black and white. I also purchased a new battery since my battery life has been very poor.

iPhone 4 back / white / $16 - item link
iPhone 4 back / black / $15 - item link
iPhone 4 battery / $7 - item link

Full list of iPhone 4 parts
How to remove back of iPhone 4 (fairly simple)

Photos

Final Thoughts
I spent a total of $48 on everything. My initial thoughts were negative, but when I started to look deeper into why Apple built such a product, it became apparent. The potential of the iPad is huge and most people just don't get it.

Books

E-books are nothing new but the iPad will create huge opportunities for authors to engage with their readers (giving readers insight on why chapters were written with a video at the end of that chapter). Also, I see books becoming social (sharing paragraphs of text you enjoyed with friends, recommending pages to read via Facebook Connect). Yes, Amazon has the online book market, but the Kindle DX ($489) simply does not have the features of the $499 iPad.

Music

I can imagine musicians using the iPad for live shows using virtual synths, beat makers, keyboards.

Transportation

Think of using it in your vehicle as a central touchscreen (similar to the Tesla S). You could use it to navigate via GPS, listen to Pandora Radio, etc. Also, to watch streaming videos on long trips with a 3G connection.

Games

The iPad will be huge for gaming. iPhone games are great but almost all would benefit from having a faster processor and larger screen.

Photos

The device is perfect for sharing/viewing photos with friends and family. The iPhone screen is too small for people like my dad who needs to pull his glasses out usually to view anything smaller than a normal size piece of paper.

Education

It would be ideal to have in any class where you need to draw figures/equations along with typing notes.

Video

Sharing and viewing videos with friends will be great on this device. Although I do wish it had a camera since Skype would be incredible on the screen.

Art

It will give artists a new digital medium.

How to Train for a Half-Marathon in 8 Weeks

http://www.patricknavarro.com/4/post/2009/09/how-to-train-for-a-half-marathon-in-8-week.html

http://www.patricknavarro.com/4/post/2009/09/how-to-train-for-a-half-marathon-in-8-week.html#comments

Uncategorized

In January 2009, I signed up for my first half-marathon at the age of 23. I wasn't a runner and really didn't exercise very often. The last time I actually finished more than a few miles, was back in high school (age 18). At 23, I was slightly overweight at 200 pounds after a few years of college. This is my experience after training and running a half-marathon in 2 months and losing nearly 25 pounds.

Please Read: I'm not a personal trainer, but the following tips worked for me during my half marathon training. I recommend seeing a doctor before any kind of extensive activity.

5 Tips for Success:

Start slow

Eat Clean

Run at least 3 times a week (total mileage increased weekly)

Lift Weights

Invest in Running Gear

Start Slow
I know you want to jump right into running but it's very important to start slow, especially if you don't run often. I made the mistake of running everyday and too often in the first week of training (18 miles). I ended up with painful shin splints which didn't allow me to run for at least a few days, so I biked instead. My advice is to start slow. If you are a beginner, start with a mile and increase your weekly mileage.

Eat Clean
What you eat during your training is vital to how you feel during your runs and how your body performs. My diet included 60% complex carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. If you are looking to save money and eat cheap, see my other blog post "Eating Healthy on The Cheap".

DO CONSUME:

Complex Carbs (100% whole wheat bread)

Protein (Chicken, Tuna, Sirloin Steak, Lean Red Meat, Lean Ground Turkey, Egg whites)

Healthy Fats (Unsalted Almonds/Peanuts, Natural Peanut Butter)

Water, Diet Soda, Unsweetened Tea

Veggies and Fruit

Beans (Black beans)

Daily Multivitamin

DO NOT CONSUME:

Alcohol

White Carbs

Soda

Sodium

Sugar

Typical day below:

Breakfast:

On the Go

1 Slice of whole wheat toast

2 tablespoons of All Natural Peanut Butter (add honey for better taste)

1 Banana

Time to Cook

3 Egg whites

1 Slice of whole wheat toast

1 Banana

Snack #1

Handful of grapes

Lunch

On the Go

2 Slices of whole wheat bread

1 slice of turkey

Time to Cook

2 Slices of whole wheat bread

1 slice of turkey

Snack #2

1 Handful of nuts (peanuts, almonds)

1 apple, orange, or any fruit

Dinner

Whole wheat pasta

Grilled chicken breast or ground turkey

Run at least 3 times a week

During my training I ran at least 3 days out of the week (usually a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Use Wednesday as a circuit training day.

M = Shorter Run

*W = Sprint/Walk given mileage

F = Long Run

Here's an example of a weekly running schedule I used:

Week 1 (5 miles) / M, *W, F - (1, 2, 2)

Week 2 (7 miles) / M, *W, F - (2, 2, 3)

Week 3 (10 miles) / M, *W, F - (3, 3, 4)

Week 4 (13 miles) / M, *W, F - (4, 4, 5)

Week 5 - (14 miles) / M, *W, F - (4, 4, 6)

Week 6 - (15 miles) / M, *W, F - (4, 4, 7)

Week 7 - (18 miles) / M, *W, F - (4, 5, 8)

Week 8 - (12 miles) / M, OFF, This day should be exactly 1 week before - (2, OFF, 10)

LIFT WEIGHTS

Resistance training is great for your body. It helps build muscle and keeps your body burning calories many hours after you finish your workout.

What I recommend

2 days a week, 30 minutes a day of resistance training (on your non-running days, Tuesday and Thursday)

Day 1 - Tuesday

Upper body (4 sets of 10 reps)

Bench

Inclined Bench

Flys

EZ bar curl

Day 2 - Thursday

Lower body (4 sets of 10 reps)

Squats

Leg Press

Leg Extensions

Lunges in place (3 sets of 50)

INVEST IN RUNNING GEAR

I can't emphasize this enough. Running shoes are a huge factor when you are running 10+ miles at a time. I began my training using some normal New Balance shoes that I figured would be ok. Unfortunately, I was getting blisters almost everytime I would run a long run. I HIGHLY recommend the following:

ASICS Gel 1150 or ASICS GT-2150 for men

Nike Dri-Fit spandex to protect against chaffing

Nike Dri-Fit socks are wonderful for the prevention of blisters

PRE-RACE DAY

You Should:

Consume lots of WATER! (at much as possible throughout the day)

Eat normally, more carbs are fine today.

Have a large pasta dinner. Preferably with whole wheat pasta and chicken or ground turkey.

Go to bed EARLY, by 9 PM since most races start at 7 AM

RACE DAY

The day you have been waiting for is here.

Before Race Breakfast:

2 slices of whole wheat toast, 1 banana

OR oatmeal, 1 banana

What to Bring

Watch

2 Goo Gels

Band aids

What to Wear

Spandex to prevent chaffing

Body Glide where chaffing could occur

Nike dri fit socks

Dri fit shirt

Band-Aids on nipples to prevent rubbing

During Race Tips

Do not start off too fast, you will be tired within the first few miles

Know your pace/mile

Keep a strong mind, your body won't quit until your mind does

Do not take advil

Consume 1 Goo Gel near 1 hour of running. Wait another 30 min and consume second Goo Gel.

Finish hard and feel the reward of your hard work!

Post Race Meal

Eat what you want, you deserve it!
